Certified Open Water Divers!

2 Nov

Yesterday we did our final two dives and our “final exam” to become certified open water divers – all went really well. Our first dive of the day was absolutely amazing, through an amazing crevice in the reef covered in coral and fish and even a very curious turtle who swam past us at the start to take a look and then came up really close to say hello when we were surfacing.

Our second dive we went down to twenty meters and had to practice some skills – I can tell you that I’m not a huge fan of taking off my mask and replacing it 20 meters under the water. We got through it and completed our final dive, picking up some conch at the bottom of the reef (just between you and I), which we made a ceviche out of later in the afternoon with our dive instructor, Ricardo.

Last night we went out with Ricky and a bunch of people from the hostel to celebrate at a very cool bar called the Lazy Lizard, right at the end of the main part of the island. The bar is right on the water and has see-saw seats in the water that you can sit on in the sun and have a few drinks. The water is so, so clear and you have little fish swimming around you, sometimes even little rays come in when there’s not too many people in the water.

Today will be a very lazy day and tomorrow Kel is heading out to dive the Blue Hole (I’m undecided). On Sunday we’re going to make our way to Flores in Guatemala and that night we’ll not only celebrate a new country, but Kel’s birthday too!
