We left San Cristobal, Iguana Hostel and The ML/Kelvin drunken duo and headed to Palenque to check out the Palenque ruins and jungle. We crammed into a jammed packed Collectivo with Evelyn and Joao (yet another aussie couple that we’ve met over here) at about midday and arrived in Palenque at about 6pm this evening. The drive itself wasnt too bad, heading up, into and over the mountains, though a bit of jungle like bush and with not a straight stretch of road longer than 100 meters for the whole 6 hours… not ideal for sleeping off a hangover as Kel discovered. We stayed at a place called El Panchan which is nothing like a hostel – its more like a huge area / community where you can camp, rent out a nice bungalow or rent out an extremely cheap and semi-divey room like Kel and I for the equivalant of about $9 between us for the night. Theres a bunch of different bars in the community and a very chilled vibe, with bands playing and fireflies buzzing around. There’s also a river that runs through the place that has thousands and thousands of bottom feeder fish swimming all along it, which looks pretty amazing.
The next day we headed up to the Palenque ruins, which are pretty amazing. Huge temples surrounded by jungle and howler monkeys screaming like jaguars. We wandered around for a few hours and then found a waterfall to swim in. Kel – ever the adventurer – found a cave behind the waterfall with bats hanging from the roof (I decided against going inside). He even managed to catch a shrimp by the light of his headtorch.
Last night we caught the overnight bus from Palenque to Cancun (13 hours) and then jumped on another bus from Cancun to Chiquita (another 3 hours) and then a boat from Chiquita to Isla Holbox.
We’re staying at a cool hostel here called Tribu, which is very cruisy. Not sure how long we’re going to stay here as there’s a bit of rain and not alot to do. Currently trying to figure out how we get over to Cuba. Luckily we have more than enough time to figure it out.
